My team and I have been on a bit of a cactus kick ever since we started brainstorming Cinco de Mayo crafts. We first shared our impossibly adorable crepe paper cactus plants and our paper cactus garland, perfect for summer parties and barbecues. Now we’re continuing this theme with our felt cactus pincushion!
There are so many reasons why I absolutely love this project. As you probably know, I love creating felt crafts. This project is also much easier than it looks, which is always a great quality for DIY projects! Best of all, this cactus pincushion project is multi-functional. Its main purpose is to be a pincushion for your sewing table, but it is also a fantastic piece of colorful home or office decor on its own. Love!
An Easy Felt Cactus Project for Sewing Lovers
To make our felt cactus pincushion, we used five colors of felt. You can choose any colors that will match your specific decor scheme, but make sure that you pick up felt for the pot, soil, cactus, flower, and flower center.
After you have your felt, download and print out the PDF template below. Cut out each piece of the template and use them as a guide for cutting your felt. Follow the step-by-step photo tutorial below as you sew your cactus pincushion together. Members can also reference the downloadable instructions for a more detailed description!
The trick is to stuff the cactus with as much poly-fil as possible to make the cactus firm. Cactus pincushions that we have seen in the past often have terra cotta pots, but we decided that we wanted to make our pot out of felt. Once we finished sewing the felt cactus together, we added sewing pins with yellow heads for a cute colorful accent!

I made one in the early ’80’s from the original book ! But I am not great with computers. I need to make 3 or 4 of these. Thank you for your help. Loving your site !
Hi Jeannie! When you print the PDF, be sure that your settings say “full size” rather than “fit page”. It may list other words, but that is the idea. 😉 This will give you the correct size. 🙂
When I upload to my cricut maker and hide the words it skews the whole design and isn’t compatible with the maker. Am I doing something wrong?
I just tried the file, looking at it first in our design software before re-uploading it into Design Space. It looks like there is a phantom shape in the teal pot layer. It is an offset diamond that is huge. This is not in our file so it is a Cricut quirk. You can hide that layer but I have uploaded a fresh file to see if that hopefully does not trigger this quirk again.
Instead of hot gluing the felt to felt, could you sew it? and does the base stay put without the pincushion tipping over?
Yes you can glue if you prefer! We haven’t had issues with the pincushion tipping over but you could add pebbles or dry beans or rice inside the bottom of the pot to weigh it down a bit.

Do you use just a regular glue gun to
glue felt to felt?
Yep! I prefer a low temperature glue gun (less finger burns 🙂 )
What kind of thread/yarn are you using?
We use embroidery floss for our felt projects. 🙂
I’m awaiting delivery on my Scan and cut I think this will be my first felt project I do so lovely.
